The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), a Mozambican organization, today criticized the authorities for still not having released the "clarifications" that the President of the Republic promised about the "violent repression" of the marches in honour of the 'rapper' Azagaia".
According to the CDD, the Ministry of the Interior, which has been tasked with investigating the circumstances of the "brutal police action", has yet to comment on the matter.
"Thirty days after Filipe Nyusi's promise, there is still no clarification on the violent repression of the March 18 march," the CDD said in a statement, stressing that "the silence on the subject follows a pattern of the Mozambican authorities, characterized by a history of the government failing to keep its promises."
The non-governmental organization (NGO) recalled that five days after the events of March 18, the President of the Republic reacted to the events with a speech in which he condemned the police violence and criticized people he called "infiltrators" and "malicious people" among the demonstrators.
"In view of the events in the country's capital, Maputo, we have instructed the Ministry of the Interior to investigate the reasons that led the police to adopt a posture of physical confrontation with young people. Also, to identify those who seek to take advantage of the individual virtue of the young 'rapper' Azagaia to achieve their ends," said the Mozambican head of state at the time.
The CDD pointed out that police forces had violated fundamental rights and the Constitution of the Republic by attacking peaceful marchers in several cities across the country.
