Presidential candidates highlight security, health and education as election campaign kicks off

Candidatos presidenciais destacam segurança, saúde e educação no arranque da campanha eleitoral

Creating conditions to improve security, hospital care or making the most of funds from natural resources to develop key areas such as education are some of the promises made at the start of the campaign for the general elections on October 9..

Running to succeed Filipe Nyusi as president of Mozambique are Daniel Chapo from Frelimo, Lutero Simango from MDM, Venâncio Mondlane from Podemos and Ossufo Momade from Renamo.

According to a RFIThese were promises and more promises heard at the start of the electoral campaign this Saturday, August 24, towards the general elections on October 7.

Frelimo's presidential candidate, Daniel Chapo, kicked off his campaign in the city of Beira and made it clear that peace is his priority.

"Without peace and security there can be no development. As I said, here we have our brothers who are suffering from terrorist attacks in Cabo Delgado", Chapo defended.

It was also in the city of Beira that the MDM's presidential candidate, Lutero Simango, gave a speech focused on health and improving care in public hospitals. "This government only hires 25 doctors a year. We're going to hire 100 doctors a year. We're going to create the conditions for an industry to produce saline solution," he promised.

Venâncio Mondlane, the presidential candidate supported by PODEMOS, opened his campaign in Matola, Maputo province, with a promise to rescue the people's Mozambicanness. "It's good for those who for 50 years have looked at the country as if it were their family store, to know that this year 2024 is over."

Renamo president Ossufo Momade, who was absent but was represented at the opening of the campaign in Zambézia, central Mozambique, by secretary general Clementina Bomba, made promises if he wins the elections. "To monetize resources so that we can support key areas. I'm talking about education, I'm talking about health and I'm talking about defense and security."
