Internet cables cut in latest attack during French Olympics

Cabos de Internet são cortados no último ataque durante Jogos Olímpicos na França

Several fiber optic cables carrying broadband services in the south and east of France were cut overnight in the latest attack on the country's infrastructure during the Olympic Games.

SFR said that five lines were cut overnight and that teams are working on repairs, a spokesman for the French telecom operator said. Other operators, including Iliad SA's Free and Netalis, also said they had been impacted in social media posts. Netalis CEO Nicolas Guillaume said the telecoms company had successfully transferred traffic to backup networks on Monday morning.

Connections serving Paris, the host of the Olympic Games this week, and the games themselves have not been affected, said a spokesman for the Olympics' telecommunications partner, Orange SA. Still, the country is dealing with attacks on its infrastructure this week as the world converges on the capital. Coordinated fires on French railway lines disrupted trains ahead of the opening ceremony on Friday.

A similar incident in 2022 led to a criminal investigation after long-distance cables connecting areas of Paris to Lyon, Strasbourg and Lille were cut in several places, causing internet outages. (Text: Bloomberg. Image: DR)
