The Mozambican Association of Women in Legal Careers (AMMCJ) accuses community leaders in the province of Cabo Delgado of continuing to authorize underage marriages and not reporting the cases to the competent authorities.
"Why don't they report it? What drives them to carry out these marriages, even though they know they are not welcome, and that there is a law against these unions?" asked Augusta Iaquite, AMMCJ delegate in Cabo Delgado, quoted by STV.
Considering this stance of the community authorities, the AMMCJ recognizes that the fight is still far from over.
Cabo Delgado province has one of the highest rates of early marriages in the country, and the AMMCJ is stepping up awareness campaigns among communities and public servants to reduce these practices.
