The insecurity and degradation of access roads in Cabo Delgado is delaying the start of voter registration in 22 posts, ten days before the end of the process.
In the Quissanga district alone, there are 19 posts with no voters registered, two in Mocímboa da Praia and one in the Ancuabe district.
The situation is worrying the Frelimo and MDM parties in Cabo Delgado, who are suggesting that measures be taken by those who are entitled to do so, to ensure that citizens of voting age living in those places are registered.
They believe that, for this particular reason, the deadlines should be extended.
The Director of the Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE) in the province, Cassamo Camal, said that work is underway to identify elements in order to produce some information to submit to the central STAE, which in turn will submit it to the National Electoral Commission.
"It's up to them to decide whether there will be an extension or not. If they do, they'll submit it to the Council of Ministers to assess, because it's the Executive that schedules the census in Mozambique," he said.
Speaking at a meeting organized by STAE to share data on the state of voter registration in the province, Camal revealed that around 502,116 voters have already been registered, corresponding to 84,97%.
The province plans to register 1,350,542 voters, including those registered last year.
"Adding up 2023 and 2024, of what has been done so far, we have a percentage of 93,42%," he said.
