Brazil is the country most affected by new dengue outbreak in America

Brasil é o país mais afetado com novo surto de dengue na América

The World Health Organization (WHO) warned yesterday of the number of dengue cases in America, with Brazil leading the way with 2.3 million cases and 769 deaths.

"The number of cases in Brazil represents an increase of 13% compared to the same period last year and 73% compared to the average of the last five years," the WHO said in a statement quoted by Notícias ao Minuto.

The source said that almost 3 million suspected and confirmed cases have been recorded in the Americas region, with Brazil, Peru and Bolivia being the hardest hit.

This figure already exceeds the confirmed cases of the disease for the whole of 2022 (2.8 million).

"Brazil is by far the most affected country, with 2.3 million notifications, of which more than 1 million have been confirmed and 1,200 classified as severe dengue. The country has recorded 769 deaths," said the World Health Organization.

The WHO also warns that around half of the world's population is at risk of contracting dengue and that dengue is now an endemic disease in more than 100 countries on several continents, with the Americas, South-East Asia and the Western Pacific being the worst affected.
