Botswana promises to maintain military support for Mozambique even after SAMIM leaves

Botsuana promete manter apoio militar a Moçambique mesmo com a saída da SAMIM

Botswana's President, Mokgweetsi Masisi, promised today in Maputo to continue providing military support to Mozambique to deal with terrorism in Cabo Delgado province.

"Just to clarify, we will stand shoulder to shoulder with the people of Mozambique to congratulate peace. Therefore, any instability, such as the one we are witnessing, we will be prepared to intervene," he said despite SAMIM's withdrawal.

The Military Mission of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) remained in the country for two years. Among the countries that provided military support were Botswana, South Africa, Lesotho and Tanzania.

Last week, the group of soldiers from the region deployed to fight terrorism in Cabo Delgado officially began their withdrawal.

"And when they hold the new SAMIM withdrawal ceremony, I'll be here to make it unforgettable. We didn't enter [Cabo Delgado] by accident," he said.

Mokgweetsi Masisi was speaking at a press conference at the Presidency of the Republic today, moments after his meeting with the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi.

At the meeting, the two statesmen witnessed the signing of seven legal instruments for bilateral cooperation between the representatives of their respective governments. These are protocols in the field of anti-corruption, trade, social protection, transport safety and public order, agriculture and food safety, communication and information technology, and passenger and goods transportation.
