Bill Gates buys nearly 4% from Heineken for 883 million euros

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has bought 3,76% of Dutch beer producer Heineken, for a total investment of 883 million euros, Reuters reported this Thursday, February 23.

The US millionaire acquired 10.8 million shares in the Dutch company Heineken Holding, the parent company of beer producer Heineken, on February 17, according to a statement to the country's market regulator.

Also quoted by the newspaper Expresso, Gates bought the shares from FEMSA, a Mexican multinational drinks bottler, which sold its entire stake and thus exited Heineken Holding's capital. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation declined to comment to Reuters on the acquisition.

The American philanthropist's investment makes him the owner of almost 4% of the beer company, despite having said, in response to users of the Reddit discussion platform, that he was not a big fan of the alcoholic beverage, recalls the agency.

In 2018, at a session where users of the platform could freely ask Gates questions, he said that he wasn't "a big beer drinker", opting to drink light beer in contexts where consumption is high, such as baseball games.
