Citizens of Asian origin were caught transporting more than one hundred thousand US dollars (more than six million meticais) - in dollars and meticais - in a car in the city of Beira, Sofala province.
The citizens told the press that they were carrying the money because they didn't trust the national banking system. The money is supposedly from the sale of a store in the town of Chimoio, in the neighboring province of Manica.
One of the Pakistanis said that the store had been sold to a foreign national.
According to the police, another citizen, the older brother of one of the accused, is being held in connection with the case, which is suspected of being money laundering. He allegedly tried to corrupt the district commander with a sum of 100,000 meticais.
