The World Bank will provide five million dollars, around 315 million Meticais, to mitigate the impacts of the bad weather in Mozambique. The announcement was made this Friday in Maputo by the World Bank's vice-president for Eastern and Southern Africa, Victoria Kwakwa.
At a time when Mozambique is counting the damage caused by the rains and floods, the World Bank announced last Friday that it was making more than 300 million Meticais available for emergency support.
"The World Bank has made five million dollars available for emergency response to these events and continues to be available to support and, in the short term, help Mozambique build a system that is more resilient to climate change," said the vice-president.
The announcement was made after a meeting with the President of the Republic, where the need for Mozambique to promote more investment in education and employment was shared.
"We put a lot of emphasis on girls' education from primary, secondary or even higher education, particularly focused on eradicating early unions and gender-based violence, which victimizes girls or women. We also want to ensure that girls stay in school, even if they are pregnant," she added.
At the meeting, the World Bank expressed its willingness to support the country in projects to promote access to electricity.
"Mozambique has plenty of resources, from hydropower to gas to solar energy, which together can help increase access to affordable electricity. We're also dealing with financial viability, sustainability, including EDM, moving forward with the rehabilitation of the Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric Plant and all the efforts being made to materialize the Mphanda Nkuwa dam project," concluded Victoria Kwakwa, who, while in Mozambique, has already visited various projects that the World Bank has financed.
For his part, the Minister of Economy and Finance said that the meeting reinforced the existing cooperation between Mozambique and that financial institution.
"Our perspective is to broaden our cooperation portfolio to promote the attraction of financing, both public and private, in our economy, favoring concessional financing, but also support for the State Budget," said the minister after the meeting. (O País newspaper)
