Since last weekend, Maputo Bay has seen the appearance of several species of dead fish from the sea, a worrying phenomenon that has caused disparate interpretations, according to a statement from the Ministry of the Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries.
Preliminary investigations point to the dredging of the navigation channel, excavations for the laying of optical fiber, as well as low dissolved oxygen (DO) levels, as possible causes of the phenomenon - the same statement said.
The note we had access to says that phenomena of this kind have happened in Maputo Bay, albeit on a smaller scale, in most cases associated with freshwater discharges from the rivers that flow into the bay.
In the same note, the fisheries sector appeals to the population not to consume fish that appear dead, both on the beach and in the sea, and to cooperate with the technicians who are on the ground investigating the causes of the incident.
