A multi-sector team made up of technicians from the Maritime Administration, members of the Lake and River Police and the Navy in Nacala, Nampula, has just identified drug trafficking hotspots, including the actors involved, and promises to publish the results of the operation in the near future.
A report in the newspaper Notícias says that the maritime administrator of Nacala, Assidade Tarige, has guaranteed that there is an ongoing action to pursue the traffickers in order to stop the phenomenon, while acknowledging that it has not been an easy task, because the smugglers use different techniques to transport the drugs.
"Despite the sophistication of these techniques, the authorities have already become aware of all the movements and their identities will be brought to the public's attention in due course. There are a number of strategies being carried out to find the core of the problem and the channels used for trafficking," the administrator assured.
In addition, Tarige said that the work carried out by the institution has been made easier with the establishment of the Maritime Court, a competent body through which cases of drug trafficking and others related to maritime security will be clarified.
However, the source said that for the year 2024 there are prospects for an increase in staffing levels for Nacala-à-Velha and Memba, including the creation of checkpoints in Baixo-Pinda and Sirissa, the latter of which borders the province of Cabo Delgado.
