Last Thursday, the National Institute of the Sea (INAMAR) dismantled some illegal fishing practices in the district of Búzi and the city of Beira, Sofala province, which are damaging the reproduction of fisheries.
During the inspection, which took place in the context of the closed season 2022-2023, four gears harmful to fishing were destroyed, including chicocota-type nets and surface gillnets with meshes smaller than those regulated.
"These nets damage fishing production, as they remove large quantities of fish from the sea that are still growing, including eggs for reproduction," said César Mapossa, who is responsible for the fisheries inspection sector in the province, quoted by the newspaper Notícias.
In addition to the destruction of harmful gear, the inspection in the district of Búzi, a place characterized by the massive use of whip nets and mostly illegal shellfish drying areas, resulted in the arrest of a 34-year-old man found at sea with small shrimp caught during a period when it is forbidden to remove this type of fishery.
