The Human Rights Bulletin of the Center for Democracy and Human Rights (CDD) says that the report by the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) to impute responsibility to Florindo Nyusi ignores some elements.

The PRM has announced the opening of proceedings against the son of the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi for causing a traffic accident causing human harm, including to two minors aged seven and eightand materials.

The CDD believes that the police failed in their duties by not taking the necessary steps to arrest Florindo Nyusi, since, as well as causing the road accident, he left the victims at the scene without providing any assistance.

Florindo Nyusi was taken from the scene of the accident by his escort, but for the CDD "he fled", and therefore committed a crime "under the terms of article 154 of the Highway Code", about abandoning victims.

"Furthermore, the police should submit the offender to a blood-alcohol test in order to ascertain the state in which the President's son was at the time of the accident," it reads.

But also, says the non-governmental organization, the PRM should collect documentation from the driver and the vehicle.

"In the meantime, contrary to legal norms, none of these acts were carried out, leaving Florindo Nyusi free and absolutely in a clear indication that because he is the son of the President of the Republic he is privileged by immunity to the laws that govern the Mozambican state," it reads.

As a result, the CDD believes that the case raises questions about the equal application of the law to every Mozambican citizen.
