The local elections in Mozambique are being heavily criticized by different opposition parties and civil society, who are denouncing fraud in the voting.
The president of the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), the third largest parliamentary force, went to the Attorney General's Office (PGR) on Wednesday to "put pressure" on the Public Prosecutor's Office to investigate criminal evidence in electoral crimes denounced by the party.
"We're here to hear from the PGR how these processes [related to the elections] are going because we can't go until this whole process is closed without a reaction from the CPGR," MDM leader Lutero Simango told the media outside the Attorney General's office in Maputo.
According to Simango, there have been illegal acts denounced by the party that constitute crimes, from the time of registration to the day of the vote for the local elections in October, whose proceedings are still underway in the Constitutional Council.
The MDM president said that he went to the PGR "simply to apply legal pressure", noting that, in addition to a political battle, the party is also in a legal battle.
The local elections in Mozambique are being heavily criticized by different opposition parties and civil society, which are denouncing fraud in the ballot, especially the falsification of public notices, with some district court decisions recognizing irregularities in the process.
Renamo, the main opposition party, has promoted marches to contest the results of the October 11 elections, gathering thousands of people in different parts of the country to demand the "restoration of electoral truth".
