Increasing cases of illegal migration and child trafficking between Mozambique and South Africa

Aumentam casos de migração ilegal e tráfico de crianças entre Moçambique e África do Sul

Extreme poverty and orphanhood are pointed out as one of the main causes of the increase in cases of illegal migration and trafficking of minors on the borders between Mozambique and South Africa.

According to the data presented by the coordinator of the national reference group for child protection, combating human trafficking and illegal migration, four suspected cases have been registered.

Márcia Pinto, quoted by Radio MozambiqueHe said that children trafficked to South Africa live in situations of risk and abuse, including sexual abuse, with limited access to basic needs such as health, shelter, education, food and clothing.

"In addition, the lack of documentation and the misunderstood legal situation in South Africa puts many children in danger of detention and deportation, forcing them to live underground," he said.

She was speaking in Maputo during the cross-border coordination meeting between Mozambique and South Africa to combat cases of trafficking and illegal migration of minors.

Márcia Pinto believes that the success of the fight against migration and trafficking in minors depends on both countries.
