Former Brazilian president and far-right leader Jair Bolsonaro began to be heard today by the Federal Police about his role in the attacks carried out by his supporters on the headquarters of the three branches of government on January 8 in Brasilia.
In mid-April, a Supreme Court judge had ordered the hearing of Bolsonaro, who was in Orlando in the United States that day.
The former president has always denied his involvement in the coup attempt perpetrated by his supporters a week after the inauguration of the current Brazilian head of state, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Bolsonaro, who returned to Brazil at the end of March after three months in the US, arrived at the Federal Police headquarters in Brasilia this morning in a vehicle with tinted windows and made no statements.
Bolsonaro had published a video on January 10, two days after the riots, contesting the election result and Lula da Silva's victory.
Supporters of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro invaded and vandalized the offices of the Supreme Court, Congress and the Planalto Palace in Brasilia on January 8, prompting condemnation from the international community.
The invasion began after Brazilian far-right activists supporting the previous president, who was defeated by Lula da Silva in last October's elections, called for a protest on the Esplanade of Ministries to try to overthrow the new government.
Following the acts of vandalism, the Federal Supreme Court (STF) removed the governor of the Federal District, Ibaneis Rocha, who has already returned to office, considering that both the governor and the former security secretary and former Bolsonaro justice minister Anderson Torres, who is in prison, acted with negligence and omission.
The Brazilian justice system is investigating Bolsonaro to find out whether he was involved in instigating the coup, and public officials and other authorities suspected of omitting or facilitating the attacks are also being investigated. (Notícias ao Minuto)
