Car attacks: Transporters upset with the government. Now they want an escort

Ataques a carros: Transportadores agastados com o Governo. Agora querem escolta

International passenger carriers are angry with the government. They say that both the Mozambican and South African governments are doing nothing to put an end to the wave of car burnings. And according to them, the solution is to escort the vehicles.

The scenario of cars burning has been going on for almost two months. Attempts by both countries to resolve the problem have come to nothing, as the phenomenon continues.

"We've already spoken to the Ministry of Transport and Communications, we've already had an answer. The Ministry of Transport has already referred the case to the Ministry of the Interior. This House is the People's House, it's the House of Laws, where laws are made. These ministries are obliged to comply with what this House says. That's how convinced I am that things will get better," Frederico Ambrósio, a representative of the Commission of International Passenger Transporters from the south of Save, told O País.

"If governments really wanted to act willingly, they would have solved this by now. One or two civilian police officers in the car, or if they don't want that, go after the car, and when it's pulled over, the police go out and arrest the criminals," he added.

According to "O País", the Assembly of the Republic, through the Committee on International Relations, Cooperation and Communities, has guaranteed that it will propose recommendations to the government.

"We will forward proposals for solutions to those who have the right to do so. For example, in the short term it would be to ensure road safety on the Maputo-Durban route, in the medium and long term it would be investigation, accountability and compensation for lost property," said Catarina António, chair of Parliament's 7th Committee.

Transport operators don't know the reasons for the vandalization of vehicles in South Africa. What is known for now is that the operators have incurred more than 20 million meticais in losses as a result of the burning of four buses.

According to the transporters, since the beginning of the phenomenon, 15 vehicles have been burned in South Africa with Mozambican license plates, four of them passenger vehicles and 10 private vehicles.
