The Tax Authority (AT) has seized more than 200 vehicles, including luxury cars and those in a poor state of repair, which were circulating illegally in Maputo city.
Most of the cars seized for regularization bear luxury license plates. They were circulating in national territory without having been issued with a vehicle import license.
"Others were even circulating with their temporary import license already expired," said AT spokesman Fernando Tinga.
In addition, the spokesman explained that the porosity of Mozambique's borders allows more vehicles with foreign license plates to enter without inspection.
"We've had several cases of vehicles with foreign license plates, from South Africa and other border countries, especially in areas where there is no physical barrier or customs checkpoint," he explained.
The head of the AT believes that, for the most part, the "trafficking" of vehicles "is a deliberate act with the intention of evading tax". (Source: Tv Sucesso)
