Saudi Arabia hosts peace talks between Russia and Ukraine in August

Arábia Saudita acolhe negociações de paz entre a Rússia e a Ucrânia em Agosto

Saudi Arabia will host peace talks for Ukraine between Kiev, Western countries and developing countries such as Brazil and India, but without Russia, in August.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday that the meeting is scheduled for August 5 and 6 and, according to sources quoted by the American newspaper, will bring together senior officials from up to 30 countries in the city of Jeddah.

However, the meeting will not include any representatives from Moscow, which has avoided peace negotiations, maintaining demands rejected by Kiev, including the annexation of territories now occupied by Russian forces.

Western diplomats quoted by the newspaper believe that these talks could culminate in a peace summit later this year, at which international leaders could present conditions that would be acceptable to both sides in the conflict, but more favorable to Kiev.

The meeting will take place after a meeting in Copenhagen in June between representatives of Ukraine, the United States, European countries, Brazil, India, Turkey and South Africa, about which little information has been released.

According to The Wall Street Journal, White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, who visited Saudi Arabia this week, is expected to take part in this new meeting, representing the US authorities.

Western diplomats quoted by the newspaper believe that the choice of Saudi Arabia to host the meeting is primarily aimed at favoring the participation of China, which maintains good relations with Moscow and has been a privileged partner of Riyadh.
