Almost 300 kg of drugs seized in Sofala

Apreendidas quase 300 kg de droga em Sofala

The National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) seized 287 kilos of methamphetamine this Friday (21) in the city of Beira, Sofala province, central Mozambique.

The drugs were allegedly unloaded on the high seas from a ship flying a foreign flag.

Three suspects were arrested in connection with the case, two Tanzanians and one Mozambican.

A satellite phone and four vehicles used to transport the drugs were seized.

SERNIC's spokesman in Sofala, Alfeu Sitóe, revealed that preliminary investigations show that the detainees are part of an international drug trafficking network.

"The two citizens of Tanzanian nationality say that they were hired to work from Johannesburg, South Africa, and that they were paid airfare and landed in the city of Beira on January 12," explained the spokesman.

He added that the detainees' accommodation had been paid for by their alleged boss, who "has not yet been neutralized".

According to Sitóe, there is no doubt that the classification of this crime went beyond the "use and consumption" of drugs.

The Mozambican, who incidentally owns one of the vehicles seized, said that he had only been hired to transport the bags to Maputo, the country's capital, leaving the responsibility for clarifying the details of the case to the other members of the group. (Text: AIM)
