The former secretaries-general of Frelimo, Eliseu Machava and Roque Silva, defended this Friday (14) the need to strengthen the mechanisms of unity among Mozambicans and to promote peace and harmony in the country.
The statements were made to the press on the sidelines of the third extraordinary session of the Frelimo Central Committee, which took place in the city of Matola, Maputo province, with the aim of electing the party's new president and secretary-general.
On the occasion, Eliseu Machava, who held the post between 2014 and 2017, stressed the importance of national unity for the country's development. "With unity, it's easy to think about any project we want to develop and achieve our goals," he said. The former leader suggested that future party leaders prioritize the unity of Mozambicans as the basis for progress.
For his part, Roque Silva, who succeeded Machava in the post, stressed the need for awareness and collective responsibility. "We have to assume that this country belongs to all of us," he said, advocating the creation of a "platform for discussion on peace and harmony" to strengthen dialogue and social cohesion.
Quoted by Dossiers & FactsRoque Silva also emphasized the importance of future Frelimo leaders reinforcing the party's vision of development, adapting it to social dynamics and the country's needs. "They must be leaders who will continue the whole development process, looking at the transformations in society and adapting to these changes," he said.
