Angola: Luanda in peaceful march against gasoline hike

Angola: Luanda em marcha pacífica contra subida da gasolina

More than two hundred people gathered at 10am today at the Santana cemetery in Luanda, where a protest march will begin against the rise in fuel prices and the end of street vending.

The demonstration is also taking place in other Angolan provinces.

The protests are taking place under the watchful eye of a huge police cordon, with activists, mostly young people, shouting for the "promised jobs" and an "end to the repression of street vending", promising to march peacefully to Largo da Mutamba.

Wielding placards with slogans such as "the price of petrol has gone up, rice has gone up, only wages haven't", "we want decent wages" and "demonstrating is not a crime", they also shouted slogans such as "João Lourenço out", as the crowd swelled with the arrival of more demonstrators.

The demonstration also involves some motorcycle taxi drivers, a professional class that, by the way, has been at the center of the protests against the increase in the price of gasoline.

According to Lusa, some opposition MPs are also present, without their party symbols, as UNITA, Angola's largest opposition party, has chosen to show solidarity with the cause without officially taking part in the demonstration, leaving its activists the option of doing so individually.
