The National Administration of Conservation Areas (ANAC) validated the project for the Effective Protection of the Miombo Forests and Sustainable Management of the Gilé Landscape, in Zambézia province, on Monday (16) in Maputo..
Quoted in a AIMThe director-general of ANAC, Pejul Calenga, explained that the project, budgeted at 4.5 million dollars, includes the implementation of the "Maputo Declaration on the Miombo Forest, Sustainable Use of Natural Resources, Livelihoods for Communities, Strengthening the Management of Marine Areas and Knowledge".
The project will also reinforce the programs being implemented by the Mozambican government and its partners, in particular Moz Rural and Promove Biodiversity, both financed by the World Bank and the European Union, for a total amount of 30 million dollars for the period 2019-2029.
"We live in challenging times, where climate change, environmental degradation and biodiversity loss are real threats that require rapid and effective responses," said Calenga, during the Validation Workshop for the project "Effective Protection of Mozambique's Miombo Forests and Marine Conservation Areas, Improving Global Mechanisms for Responding to Climate Change".
The source added that the conservation actions in the Gilé National Park, sustainable use, restoration of the Miombo forest and diversification of the communities' livelihoods to be implemented will contribute to economic growth, combating deforestation, desertification and addressing climate change, thus contributing to improved landscape management and conservation.
"On the one hand, its pilot area is the landscape of Gilé National Park and it will study mechanisms for expanding marine conservation areas, within the framework of the international commitments Mozambique has made," he said.
