The Mozambican Medical Association (AMM) is considering expelling doctors who, for unjustified reasons, do not join the national strike in progress since July 10.
Mozambican doctors are demanding better working conditions and salaries from the government, as well as the payment of overtime owed by the state.
In a statement quoted by RFI, the Medical Association announced the decision to expel members who don't join the strike and that the proposal will soon be submitted to the general assembly of the association and the governing council of the Order of Doctors, at a time when these professionals have taken to the streets, this time in the city of Beira to demand better pay and working conditions. Leonel Andela, spokesman for the strikers, calls on everyone to join in.
"This is not just a fight for the medical profession. This fight is for the national health service. Not all Mozambicans can afford medical care in a private clinic, we have to have hospitals with minimum conditions. We ask patients and civil society in general to join this fight," said the spokesperson.
For the strikers, the Ministry of Health (MISAU) is an obstacle to their demands to the government and they invite the sector's minister, Armindo Tiago, to join their cause.
"Let him be sensitive to this cause, because this is his cause too," said the group, stressing that the third national strike by the Mozambican medical profession, which began on July 10, will continue until the government meets its demands.
