Frelimo, Mozambique's ruling party, won 195 of the 250 seats in the Assembly of the Republic, and its candidate Daniel Chapo was elected President of the Republic with 70.67% of the vote.
The data revealed on Wednesday, 24, by the president of the National Electoral Commission (CNE) confirms that the big news from the elections held on September 9 was the rise of the Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique (PODEMOS), the second largest party in parliament, with 31 deputies, while its leader, Albino Forquilha, will be the new leader of the opposition.
According to VOA, the big losers were Ossufo Momade and his Renamo party, the second largest party in Mozambique since 1994.
While as a presidential candidate Momade obtained only 5.81%, Renamo managed to elect only 20 parliamentarians, when in this legislature it had 60 deputies.
For its part, the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), whose presidential candidate Lutero Simango won 3.21% of the votes, lost two MPs, dropping from six to four in the next Assembly of the Republic.
Presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane has already announced that he will file appeals with the Constitutional Council because, according to him, he won the election.
The MDM has also decided to appeal.
The Constitutional Council has yet to confirm the results.
