Poisoned water in Cabo Delgado: authority speaks of Fake News

Água envenenada em Cabo Delgado: autoridade fala em Fake News

The Director of Water for the Northern Region (ARN) of Cabo Delgado, Eugênio Matsinhe, has denied reports of poisoned water being supplied and consumed in the Metuge district of Cabo Delgado province.

According to reports on social media, the central water supply and treatment station in the district had been poisoned by terrorists.

Matsinhe said that the information was not true, because the insurgents had launched attacks in the Pulo area, about 7km from the central water station.

"This information is not real. We don't have any poisoned water in our water treatment center. The insurgents didn't even invade our water treatment plant, but what did happen, they went to act in an area of Pulo. They were there 7 km from our water treatment plant. So, our plant wasn't affected by this poisoning," he said, quoted by the Zumbo FM.

Eugênio Matsinhe said that the water supply in the Northern Region of Cabo Delgado province was under control, and called on customers to consume the water as normal.

"The message to customers is that they should continue to consume the water normally, because it hasn't been poisoned. We continue to produce and supply normally and we are monitoring the water itself," he explained.

Água da Região Norte (ARN) of Cabo Delgado issued a press release on Thursday morning revealing that the Pemba Water Treatment Plant is guarded by the Armed Defense Forces of Mozambique, the Rapid Intervention Unit and the Rwandan Armed Forces, thus guaranteeing the security of the site.
