UN agency calls for more international support for Cabo Delgado

Agência da ONU pede maior apoio internacional para Cabo Delgado

The UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS) is calling for more international support for efforts to help the people of Cabo Delgado province.

The executive director of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), Moreira da Silva, said that the communities in the province are suffering from the impact of the violence that in more than seven years has killed thousands of people and displaced more than 1 million.

According to Silva, who is quoted by UN News, the "humanitarian perspective is terrible". He said that the debate to find support should involve national partners at different levels.

Until, according to UNOPS, around 1.7 million people will need humanitarian assistance and protection in Mozambique this year alone, including 1.3 million affected by conflict.

The head of UNOPS reports "an unprecedented reality of multiple crises" as a factor that justifies the conflict in northern Mozambique remaining on people's minds.

Jorge Moreira da Silva stressed that activities are underway to improve the situation of the communities. He praised the resilience and determination of the local populations to "forge a peaceful and prosperous path".

The appeal to the international community is to "renew its commitment to support national and local efforts to find practical solutions for communities affected by conflict and climate vulnerability".
