Afrobasket: Mozambique to appeal defeat by Angola due to "trickery"

Afrobasket: Moçambique vai recorrer da derrota com Angola por “tramoia”

The Mozambican national basketball team was eliminated from the race for Afrobasket 2025 by the Angolan team. The difference was one point, in the last minute of the game.

The Mozambican delegation believes that the defeat was motivated by a succession of events which, strategically orchestrated, influenced the physical and psychological condition of the players.

"We're already working on the protest so we can submit it to FIBA Africa. We're on schedule. The technical department here at the federation is already working on it. Whether or not the factors were enough to determine the results, I think so," said a source from the national team's technical staff, whose name we couldn't ascertain, at a press conference.

But what situations occurred?

"In the first game, they picked up the team very late. The team only arrived 30 minutes into the game. That's not enough time to adapt to the stadium and the concentration of the players themselves. All the teams that have to take part in these tournaments, the federations that are hosting them receive a certain amount stipulated by FIBA. This amount includes transportation, accommodation, food and all the logistics that may be a burden for the host federation. Mozambique paid for all these obligations, and we didn't deserve that treatment. Unfortunately, that's what we saw. On the second day, we had a situation with the bus where the driver came late to the bus, after insistent calls, and when he arrived, he said that the bus had door problems."

The source said, however, that the Angolan federation was in a position to provide another bus to remedy the problem, but simply didn't do so.

"We preferred to guide the team so they could walk, as the stadium wasn't too far away. We tried to gain time to be able to arrive at the pavilion on time so that the team could have time to concentrate and warm up," he lamented.
