A new report by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) indicates that around 200,000 people have left Sudan since the beginning of the conflict.
The organization now fears that the number could rise to more than 800,000 in the coming months.
According to the agency's spokesperson, Olga Sarrado Mur, around 700,000 people have already been internally displaced, while "many more" remain "confined to their homes", unable to cover their most basic needs.
The official explained today that travel is complicated by the fighting and is expensive, given the lack of fuel and the price of it.
"The people crossing the border are Sudanese, but there are also people of other nationalities, including former refugees who are now returning to their respective countries, especially in the case of South Sudan," he said.
In the meantime, the organization is calling for "immediate financial support for all those involved in the response, in order to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe, prevent the overloading of resources and provide dignified support to the people forced to flee, as well as to the communities that host them."
The conflict has been going on for almost a month in Sudan between army troops and paramilitaries from the Rapid Support Force (RSF).
