The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) launched, this Tuesday, at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, an appeal for more funding to help victims of Cyclone Gombe, which affected provinces in northern Mozambique.
Boris Cheshirkov recalls that after cyclones Idai and Kenneth, Gombe was the most severe storm over the country.
The UN portal writes that UNHCR is mobilizing shelters for hundreds of thousands of Mozambican families affected by Tropical Cyclone Gombe.
"The agency points out that most of the inhabitants are from Zambezia, Nampula and Tete provinces. They will be the beneficiaries of the efforts involving the Government and various partners," it reads.
The category 4 storm entered the Mozambican territory through the province of Nampula on March 11 and destroyed houses, flooded lands, and forced tens of thousands of victims to flee for safety. More than 380,000 people were affected, including people who were already displaced and in need of immediate assistance.
UNHCR has set aside items to help 62,000 refugees, internally displaced persons, and members of host communities.
Mozambique faces several storms each year during the cyclonic and rainy season, which runs from October to April.
Earlier this year, in January, the country was affected by Tropical Storm Ana, which caused up to 181,000 people to be displaced.
