The Maputo Municipal Council (CMCM) has suspended the implementation of the third lane along the marginal avenue to allow time for road safety improvements.
According to the director of Mobility, Transport and Transit, Nelson Massango, despite the fact that the CMCM has mobilized municipal and traffic police officers, ambulances and sound instruments to raise awareness among users, in the four days since the measure was implemented, the authorities have recorded 10 pedestrian accidents and two accidents involving collisions between vehicles.
Speaking at a press conference yesterday (Wednesday 10), the source explained that although the measure has resulted in improved traffic flow, the municipality has noticed several irregularities on the part of road users and needs to improve safety issues.
"Several observations were made in the afternoon, especially with regard to pedestrian crossings. When crossing the road, pedestrians don't use crosswalks and others cross without observing the safety measures in place," said Nelson Massango.
