The government is going to expand the remote traffic control and monitoring system in order to reduce the number of road accidents in the country, Mateus Magala, the Minister of Transport and Communications, said yesterday.
Quoted by "Noticias", Mateus Magala, who was speaking during the inauguration of road safety infrastructures in the Maputo Metropolitan Area, said that these were traffic monitoring and inspection cameras, a center for monitoring traffic violations, a pedestrian bridge, traffic circles and traffic lights built in the municipalities of Maputo, Matola and Marracuene.
To this end, the government is talking about an investment of seven million US dollars financed by South Korea.
With this project, the country is embracing a new concept in road safety promotion that should be adjusted to local needs and specificities.
As well as infrastructure, the initiative includes a system for monitoring infringements and processing fines in the provincial and Maputo city commands of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique, with a view to promoting transparency and speed in road inspection and making offending drivers accountable.
He noted that the system not only makes it easier to comply with the law, but also reinforces the need for responsibility when using the roads, while at the same time challenging road enforcement officers to be more honest and transparent.
