Four people died and one was injured in an aviation accident on Saturday (19), along National Road Number One (EN1), in the district of Matutuíne, Maputo province.
The accident, involving a collision between cars, took place at around 5pm in the town of Satula, involving two light vehicles.
The head of the Public Instruction and Education Section at the Traffic Police (PT) in Maputo, José Novela, was quoted by AIM as saying that the fatalities were occupants of the light vehicle that was driving against the road at the time of the collision.
"They were transferred to the hospital in Matutuíne, where the doctor declared all four dead. The driver of the cargo vehicle was also rescued with minor injuries, he is still under observation and the accident resulted in extensive damage," said Novela.
The source points to speeding and drunk driving, together with driving in the opposite direction, as the possible causes of this accident.
"The causes of this accident were the off-road traffic of the first car identified and the other being excessive speed. Situations like this occurred because the first people in the light vehicle were, above all, drinking alcohol, as there are traces that they consumed alcoholic beverages while driving," he said.
In light of the incident, police authorities are urging motorists to observe basic traffic rules and drive with caution.
