The crash of a bus belonging to the Vilankulo Football Sports Association (ADV) caused the death of one person and injured 18 in the Chissibuca region, in the Zavala district of Inhambane province.
The motorcade was leaving Maputo for Vilankulo after a Moçambola match in Nampula province against Desportivo de Nacala.
The situation has been widely reported, and more information is filling in the plot that culminated in the accident.
According to the driver, the bus overturned when he was trying to get back onto the carriageway, after being forced to leave it to avoid hitting "ambuleiros [we think he means street vendors]".
"Exactly what happened, I was coming from Maputo in the direction of Maxixe and, going up that hill, even though it was raining, but I was going at a very normal speed, taking into account that there is slippery sidewalk. From there, the car suddenly pulled me over to my left side and I was going exactly towards those two hills. ambuleiros there. And when I try to pull the car so that it doesn't hit the ambuleirosBy chance, I managed to get out, I'm getting here to see if I can get the bus onto the road, the bus didn't [accept] and crashed into the back of this tree here, and then it fell," he said.
He recognizes that the dampness of the sidewalk made it difficult to control the vehicle, "but at some point, according to the local structure, they say it's not the first, it's the fourth to fall".
The bus driver's version is not in line with the Traffic Police's (PT) expert report which points to speeding as the cause of crashes and rollovers, the mechanical condition of the vehicle and the road conditions.
"The accident occurred due to mechanical deficiencies combined with excessive speed, also the slippery sidewalk due to the rain was on the grip," said Francisco Massicame, head of the PT brigade in Zandamela.
