Abuse of trust: Mozambique risks suspension for debts at AfroBasket 2025

Abuso de confiança: Moçambique arrisca-se a suspensão por dívidas no AfroBasket 2025

A debt of 15,000 US dollars (around 968,000 meticais) could lead FIBA (International Basketball Federation)-Africa to suspend Mozambique, causing national clubs to stop participating in BAL and WBAL games.

According to the portal LanceThe balance was left in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, after taking part in AfroBasket 2025.

The President of FIBA-Africa, Aníbal Manave, said that the situation in Mozambique will be analyzed next month at the meeting of the continental body's Board of Directors.

"Well, what's happening is that Mozambique is abusing trust, you understand. And that's enough. You can't go to a competition and not pay what you have to pay. Above all, you can't pay the fees to another country, to another national federation. It's one thing if you don't fulfill your obligations to FIBA. We can manage that. But for us to go to a competition and not pay what we have to pay to the organizing country, that's enough, that's an abuse," said Manave.

Mozambique spent around 27,000 dollars on the competition and only paid out 12,000 dollars. The hosts reported the case to FIBA-Africa.

According to Manave, it's not the first time Mozambique has behaved like this, "but this is probably the worst of all".

"So, in order to help Mozambique solve this problem, we're going to suspend it at the next board meeting we have in November," he lamented.

On the other hand, there are reports of debts of 18,000 euros (1,350 meticais) to the organizer of the training camp in Portugal, players, technical and support staff who were on the AfroBasket Abidjan 2025 operation, adds the website.
