The United States government has expelled South Africa's ambassador to Washington, Ebrahim Rassol, allegedly for inciting racism and expressing hostility towards Donald Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said yesterday.
"We don't have anything to discuss with him, and he's also considered a person of no interest," wrote Rubiu on the social network X.
This kind of diplomatic act is relatively rare in the world, but it is believed to be revealing the political tensions between the two countries.
The ambassador rejected the accusations and said he was the victim of political persecution. He claims that his criticism of the Trump administration has been misinterpreted and distorted.
The Trump administration believes it is a necessary measure to maintain order and national security.
The outcome of this episode could raise pertinent questions about human rights, freedom of expression and mutual respect between countries.
