The activist, Wilker Dias, argues that the biggest gain from the process underway at the Attorney General's Office (PGR), against high-ranking members of the Mozambican police, could be the accountability of those involved.
He maintains this conviction in full knowledge of the history of national justice, which almost always tends to benefit people with power of influence in the state, to the detriment of the victims.
"I believe that we are all equal before the law. And we need to gradually demythologize this, because throughout our history we've seen that the issue of access to justice until its final product is almost an unreality, it always tends to swing one way, and we're going to try to counter this, to break down this barrier that exists in our justice system. That's one of the first actions. I believe that the first big step is being taken today, when we will probably have the commander himself and the Minister for the Interior present later on," he said.
Dias was speaking on Thursday, after the first hearing to present allegations in his case against the former General Commander of the Police, Bernardino Rafael, and the former Minister of the Interior, Pascoal Ronda.
"We're now at the hearing stage, where we'll be able to say what our allegations are regarding this case of the deaths, etc. with the public prosecutor. I believe that we will then move on to the next stages. This process comes at a time when we also have more deaths to verify, and it will certainly be added to this dossier, and another dossier may be opened for the other commanders who were behind these deaths in the national territory", he said, quoted by the press. Success TV.
The lawsuit demands that these entities be held responsible for the hundreds of deaths that were allegedly caused by agents of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique in repressive actions during the post-election demonstrations between October 2024 and January 2025.
