Venâncio Mondlane has shown signs of life, but is still in an uncertain place

Venâncio Mondlane já deu sinal de vida, mas ainda está em parte incerta

Former presidential candidate Venancio Mondlane "already showed signs of life" in the early hours of this morning, according to his political advisor, Dinis Tivane.

Mondlane has been in an uncertain location since yesterday, after managing to escape amid lethal bullets and tear gas fired by the Rapid Intervention Unit. At the time of the police action, hundreds of people were greeting the former candidate in the suburbs of Maputo. There were two deaths and 16 injured, according to Mondlane's press office.

Speaking to RDP, Tivane said that Mondlane's "disappearance" at that moment caused concern among his support group because, "due to tear gas, they didn't see which car he left in".

However, in the early hours of this morning, Mondlane was reportedly in communication with the support group. Tivane did not, however, say where Mondlane was when asked whether or not he was in the country because of the event.

"I think he will make that assessment better than anyone. However, if we combine this situation with the one we experienced last year on October 21, I think they are completely different situations... I don't think there's any need for him to step aside. At that time the climate, the political tension was very worrying and completely different from what we see today," he said, leaving the assessment and decision up to Mondlane.

"He's the one who's going to look after his safety better than anyone else," he said, stressing, however, that there are conditions for him to remain in the country.
