Dinis Tivane: Há razões objectivas para pensar que se pretendia assassinar Venâncio Mondlane

Dinis Tivane, the political advisor to former presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, says there are objective reasons to conclude that the leader of the post-election demonstrations was murdered.

"I think so. We have objective reasons to think so. The trick was not to fire directly at him. The idea was to create chaos, and in the midst of that confusion they could say that a stray bullet got through," said Tivane.

During a caravan in the suburbs of Maputo yesterday, Mondlane was forced to interrupt his program due to gunfire from the Rapid Intervention Unit. Two people died and 16 were injured. Venâncio Mondlane is again in an uncertain location, according to his press office.

Speaking to RDP, he noted that the strategy adopted meant that the police could not ostensibly fire shots at Venancio Mondlane. "They would want to create a situation so that they could then invent a narrative that would protect that corporation for the acts committed."

According to Tivane, one of Mondlane's advisers who was hit by a bullet during the riots was taken to a treatment unit and is doing well.
