Germany announces suspension of new aid to Rwanda

Alemanha anuncia suspensão de novas ajudas para o Ruanda

After the United Kingdom and Canada, this time Germany has announced that it has decided to suspend new aid to Rwanda, in reaction to the M23 offensive in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo..

According to an RFI report, the German cooperation ministry has announced that it has suspended "new financial aid" as well as "high-level meetings with Kigali" and that it will also "rethink existing cooperation with Rwanda".

In the same statement, Germany condemns the offensive by the M23 group, denouncing the "violation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the DRC".

Berlin informed Kigali of the suspension, which until now has benefited from annual aid of 50 million euros for projects linked to economic development, energy, environmental protection and vaccine production.

Germany has asked the Rwandan authorities to withdraw the armed forces that are in the DRC and to give up their support for the M23 group.

The Rwandan Ministry of Foreign Affairs reacted on the social network X and made it clear that the German politicization of cooperation was a "mistake" and would be "counter-productive".

These German measures are in addition to the British decision to suspend most financial aid and that of the Canadians, who have also suspended new aid for government economic projects as well as export visas for regulated goods and technologies to Rwanda.
