Chapo's worst adversaries: isolation, Venâncio Mondlane, Frelimo and financiers

Os piores adversários de Chapo: o isolamento, Venâncio Mondlane, Frelimo e financiadores

Researcher and analyst João Feijó believes that the President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, is a citizen without a presidential profile and that, during his time in office, he will have to deal with strong opponents.

Speaking this afternoon on the Center for Public Integrity Podcast "CIP Cast", Feijó listed isolation, Venâncio Mondlane, Frelimo, and the financiers as the main obstacles to his governance.

He believes that, from the point of view of party militancy, Chapo emerged from the "accompanying fauna" of party members with a bureaucratic profile. In other words, the country's current president still conveys the image of an ordinary civil servant. In fact, he noted that it was the first time that the country had a president who did not come from the country's critical sectors such as defense, security or the Interior Ministry.

"So he doesn't control the sinister areas in the party... I think he's isolated. He doesn't have the profile to face a party and its financiers with countless interests," he said, noting that Chapo's image has been weakened in the eyes of the population by the presidential "illegitimacy" attributed to him.

The fact that Chapo doesn't have full control of the Frelimo party could prevent him from making bolder decisions.

For the analyst, Chapo is in the shadow of Venâncio Mondlane when it comes to presenting a presidential profile and communicative prowess. While the former is more charismatic and gathers consensus among the masses, the latter is limited to being a civil servant with mundane speeches.

"At the moment [Chapo] is in the shadow of a candidate, Venancio Mondlane, who is the opposite in terms of his ability to communicate with the masses. Daniel Chapo has a heavier, more bureaucratic look. When you look at him, he conveys the image of a civil servant in a registry office. He's a quiet civil servant, with a dull, gray and tired speech. He doesn't have the dynamism that Venâncio Mondlane has with his oratory, charisma and smile that radiates sympathy to the masses," he compared.
