A total of 116 hectares of agricultural crops were destroyed by the effects of Tropical Cyclone Chido in the district of Mecufi, in Cabo Delgado province, which was the most affected by the storm, according to preliminary data released on Friday by the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD)..
According to the INGD, the impact on the productive sector in that district also reveals a severe scenario in the fishing and livestock sectors.
"Preliminary data indicate the death of 1,302 farm animals, including cattle, goats and poultry, as well as the destruction of 454 boats and 136 fishing gear, seriously affecting the livelihoods of local communities," says the INGD, quoted by Terra Magazine.
Cyclone Chido, which, it should be remembered, was characterized by winds of up to 260 km/h, intense rainfall of up to 250 mm in 24 hours and severe thunderstorms, left, according to preliminary data, a trail of destruction that includes a total of 39,133 houses and partial damage to another 13,343, as well as 250 schools and 52 health facilities affected.
In terms of fatalities, current figures point to 75 deaths in the three provinces affected, namely Cabo Delgado, Niassa and Nampula, as well as 768 injured and one person still missing.
