A group of members and sympathizers of Renamo, the largest opposition party in Mozambique, were involved in a scuffle today, Saturday (21), in front of the building of their provincial delegation, in the city of Chimoio, in Manica province, resulting in two people being slightly injured.
In a publication by AIMBrigadier Cipriano Joaquim, a demobilized member of Renamo, explained that the confusion began when a group of former guerrillas went to the Renamo provincial office to close the doors and demand the resignation of Ossufo Momade.
"There are two groups here. One is of former guerrillas who support President Ossufo Momade and others want him to stay. It led to confusion, which culminated in the slight injury of two Renamo members," said the brigadier.
According to the source, "due to the results that were achieved in the last elections, there is a syllabic division in the party". "It's split into two parts. What happened today could happen again in the near future. The people, members and sympathizers are not satisfied with what happened in the last elections."
According to the brigadier, Ossufo Momade should step down from the party leadership "because we are in a new era where the party needs a new dynamic".
"This is a struggle between two groups that have always worked together, but fell out because of the latest events on October 9. The election results have created an atmosphere of tension within Renamo. We hope that everything will be overcome in the near future with the resignation of President Ossufo Momade," added Cipriano Joaquim.
The violence at Renamo's provincial office in Manica came to an end after the intervention of the Republic of Mozambique Police (PRM) to calm the members' tempers.
In last October's general elections, Renamo won just one seat in the Assembly of the Republic for Manica province.
