A civil society group, represented by the Center for Democracy and Human Rights (CDD), the Center for Public Integrity (CIP) and the Center for Civil Society Learning and Empowerment (CESC), has filed a major lawsuit against mobile phone operators involved in illegal internet blocking between October and November.
According to a publication by the Center for Democracy and Human Rights (CDD), the complaint seeks to hold the telecommunications operators (Movitel, Vodacom and the state-owned company Tmcel) responsible, including compensation for the damage caused, for the recent blocking of Internet access in the context of the post-election demonstrations.
"With the main action, the civil society organizations intend to guarantee the effective accountability of the entities involved, demand reparation for the damage caused and ensure the non-repetition of practices that undermine human rights and democratic principles," reads an article.
This process, according to civil society, will be accompanied by other actions that will ensure that operators are held accountable by the country's telecommunications regulator, the National Communications Institute of Mozambique (INCM).
