Police from the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) shot dead at least three people in Ressano Garcia when they tried to repel demonstrators who were blocking the crossing at the cross-border post. Several people were injured.
Among the victims was a young man who was shot twice in the back when he was broadcasting live on Facebook, where he was reporting on the action of the PRM who raided homes with tear gas bullets. The population showed its fury.
The demonstrators fought back against the forceful action of the PRM agents and vandalized public institutions. The Administrative Post was reduced to ashes; the residence of the Head of the Administrative Post was set on fire. At least one vehicle was also set on fire.
The demonstrators were complying with the directives issued by presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, according to which the borders should only operate until 12 noon.
Also as part of these actions, the group of people removed the Mozambican flag from the pole and put the flag of the Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique (Podemos) in its place. This flag bears the image of Venâncio Mondlane - supported by the party - and the colors of the political formation.
The PRM's forceful action came on the same day that the spokesman for the General Command, Orlando Mudumane, said that the police would use all means against the demonstrators.
