Mozambique/ Post-election crisis: South African transporters call for Ramaphosa's mediation

Moçambique/ Crise-pós eleitoral: Transportadores sul africanos pedem mediação de Ramaphosa

The largest South African trade association in the freight transport sector, the Road Freight Association, is calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to try to mediate a peaceful solution to the post-election situation in Mozambique.

The group says that the post-election violence is having a negative impact on the Mozambican and South African economies, as well as the southern African region.

The South African hauliers are also calling on SADC to play a major role in putting an end to the violent protests.

"SADC has to play its part. The situation in Mozambique is not only affecting Mozambique and South Africa, but will affect Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi, countries in the SADC region that use Mozambican ports for exports and imports.

This is not good for the African continent as a global competitor and it is not good for the stabilization of Africa. SADC has great politicians and great leaders who need to take a stand," said Gavin Kelly, president of the organization, quoted by Rádio Moçambique.

In the case of South Africa, Gavin Kelly estimates that the daily damage caused by the closure of the Lebombo border is 10 million rand, which includes losses in sectors such as tourism, agriculture and services, which also depend on cargo transportation.

This Tuesday, the South African authorities advised those wishing to travel to Mozambique to use the Mananga border post in neighboring Eswatini.
