Police authorities shot dead five people this morning in Emalahleni (formerly Witbank), in Mpumalanga, and a sixth was arrested, suspected of carrying out robberies at automated teller machines (ATMs).
Hawks spokesman Katlego Mogale said that the information had been operationalized, leading the team to Schoongezicht, where the group was said to have gathered in an alleged hideout.
"The multidisciplinary team was strategically positioned to keep an eye on the vehicle identified in the intelligence information. The vehicle was spotted leaving the area and, when the team tried to stop it, the suspects opened fire and there was a shootout," said Mogale.
Rifles, pistols and explosives were recovered at the scene. The car used by the gang is being investigated.
