Cabo Delgado: Mozambique and Rwanda improve their approach to terrorists

Cabo Delgado: Moçambique e Ruanda aprimoram abordagem aos terroristas

The Commander General of the Armed Forces of Mozambique (FADM), Demiral Mangrasse, held a meeting last Friday (22) with the commander of the Rwandan Security Forces (RSF), Maj Gen Emmy Ruvusha, to discuss operations in the northern operational theater, especially in Cabo Delgado province, in a context where the challenges continue to demand greater attention.

According to a AIMThe information was posted on the Rwandan government's social network (Twiter), pointing to the statement by the commanders at the end of a meeting between the parties aimed at agreeing on synergies in the efforts to restore peace and stability in the north of the country, which has been affected by terrorism since October 2017.

"The discussion at the meeting focused on joint operations to flush out the terrorists in Cabo Delgado province," reads the Rwandan government statement.

The agreement between the commands comes at a time when there are rumors that, in recent days, insurgents have claimed civilian victims through sporadic incursions.

Among the dead are members of the local "Naparamas" militia, in the village of Nacuale, in the Ancuabe district, where there has been intense fighting between terrorists and government troops.

The civilians were killed in a remote village of Nacuale, while taking part in a traditional ceremony for initiation rites.

Sources say that on the same day, the terrorists destroyed a local health center and burned down several of the population's houses.

A few days ago in Brussels, Belgium, the European Union (EU) announced additional support of 20 million euros for the RDF operating in Cabo Delgado province in the fight against terrorism.

The funding comes from the European Peace Facility (EPF), with the aim of strengthening the capacity of Rwandan troops in the fight against Islamic extremism in the region.

This is additional support, as the amount complements a previous sum of 20 million euros granted in December 2022 to support the continued deployment of the Rwandan army in Cabo Delgado.

The European Union believes that the Rwandan intervention, which began in July 2021 at the request of the Mozambican authorities, has been fundamental in combating the insurgency linked to Islamic State.

The collaboration between the EU and Rwanda reflects a joint approach to tackling security challenges in the region, recognizing the crucial role of Rwandan troops in stabilizing Cabo Delgado and facilitating the safe return of displaced residents to their communities and areas of origin.
