The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is meeting today, November 20, in Harare, Zimbabwe, for an Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government.
The meeting will analyze the security situation in the region, with emphasis on the post-election tension in Mozambique.
The summit will be chaired by the Zimbabwean Head of State, Emmerson Mnangagwa, in his capacity as Chair of SADC, "with a view to updating the political and security situation in the region," says a statement issued at the organization's headquarters.
"The Extraordinary Summit of SADC Heads of State and Government will be preceded by the Extraordinary SADC Organ Troika Summit, which will be chaired by Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania and Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defense and Security Cooperation.
"It will be preceded by preparatory meetings, namely the meeting of SADC Senior Officials, the meeting of the Ministerial Committee of the Organ on Politics, Defense and Security Cooperation and the meeting of the SADC Council of Ministers," the statement said.
The crisis in Mozambique could also have a significant impact on neighboring landlocked countries such as Zambia, Malawi, Congo and Zimbabwe, which rely heavily on Mozambican ports for their imports and exports.
